What Are The Seven Distinct Forms Of Art?
What is it like to have an interest in the seven distinct forms of art…Or at least a few of them?
Well, not being an all-rounder is quite natural, but to exhibit to the world what we know is much more important for us to grow. Discovering ourselves from the possible nothing we are is actually an entertaining process.
There is a simple yet popular Shakespearean saying which says that the world’s a stage and we, the people are all actors playing their parts. In that case isn’t it necessary to know some forms of art to be a better actor to play a better role with a sheer amount of talent? So here comes the actual question: ‘Who can identify the real talent in you?’ And the answer is: It’s none other than you alone.
I identified myself as an artist when I started to recognize my potential in storytelling and narration. As a literature lover, I began to carve out a niche for myself. Writing and reading with a tinge of sketching and painting, along with some music to furnish and to delve deep into the concept of filmmaking and theatre performances, completes my affection towards art. I don’t find myself encouraging all seven forms of art, but I would genuinely like to present this platform as a source of inspiration and knowledge to all the art lovers out there.
Definition of Art
And now, how can we define art and its seven distinct forms? Any form of art is a statement or use of human imagination, talent, and creativity. Although many artistic creations are primarily experienced visually, they can also be heard or touched. The term “art” encompasses a wide range of distinctive forms of expression. Yet, the generic term “the arts” basically covers seven different types of art. Arts are nowadays frequently employed for political or social commentary, despite being valued largely for their beauty or emotional impact.
Most art works can be broadly grouped into the seven types of art. Not only does this increase our enjoyment of art, but it also helps us to appreciate it much more thoroughly. During the evolution of mankind, particular media and modes of artistic expression have evolved, but for the most part, art may be categorized into one of the following seven traditional fields. Our emotions and moods are affected by various forms of art in distinct ways.
Seven Distinct Forms Of Art
The forms of art in my order of interest and the first being:
- Literature
- Music
- Painting
- Cinema
- Theatre
- Architecture
- Sculpture
Let’s get deep into the history that each form of art has in store.
Literature
Literature is one of the strongest forms of art with a storytelling format. It is a literary form that can be read or spoken. Literature reflects the culture and traditions of a language or a community. Poetry, essays, dramas, biographies, works of fiction and non-fiction, satires, and other types of writing are all included in the broad category of literature, which spans all written languages.
While reading is delightful, writers often use literature to criticize society. They do this by organizing words that bring joy into elegant sentences. Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf, and Charles Dickens are just a few of the most well-known authors who have used language and the written word to comment on or present a viewpoint on society. While literature is one of the seven forms of art and stands alone as a distinct art form, it is also strongly tied to theatre, poetry, film, music, and the spoken word.
Music
As an immaterial concept, neither music nor art can be perceived visibly. Music is one of those art forms where the arrangement of sound in time is received visibly. Music also requires a performance, just as does theatre. Therefore, it is fleeting and unstable. Music can be considered one of the most emotive and effective forms of art. From ancient pan flutes to pop music of the twenty-first century, the history of music is incredibly wide. Music has always had a very high social position and was already considered an art form during the Liberal Arts period.
Painting
Painting is a way of employing paint as your main medium to communicate your artistic vision. A painter is an artist who primarily creates art forms in this medium. A painter develops their work by slathering various coloured paints onto a solid surface, typically a canvas, to create a piece of art. Oil, acrylic, and watercolour paints are the most common types of paint, but you can also use pigments, dyes, and inks as well as other materials.
There are several ways to apply paint: it can be brushed on, smeared, dabbed, or splashed. With cave paintings from prehistoric periods, painting is one of the oldest kinds of art. Paintings are divided into categories based on their subject, style, and genre. The typical categories for painting subjects include still life, landscape, seascape, portrait, and abstract. Painting can be done in a variety of ways, including modernist, expressionist, classical, surreal, cubist, abstract, impressionist, etc. Painting is one of the earliest forms of art that communicated the artists perspectives to society.
Cinema
Cinema or the art form of movies, which involves both our auditory and visual senses, is the projection of a three-dimensional world onto a two-dimensional screen. Movies tell a story, much like literature does, but they do it through the spoken word, visual art, and more. The cinema has developed swiftly into the most celebrated art forms. Experts in special effects, animation, makeup, costumes, screenplay, scene design, soundtrack, acting, directing, and other fields are employed by the film industry. Every movie production requires a diverse variety of creative vision and talent.
By the turn of the 20th century, film had been created. A completely new art form was developed with the creation and exploration of motion pictures. The so-called cinematic attractions, whose main theme was the marvel of moving pictures, initially captured the public’s attention. Cinema is one of those art forms that picturizes the clear image of social construction.
Theatre
In the artistic medium of theatre, dramatic performance is combined with visual art. Performance art has been incorporated into the notion of theatre over time. It often encompasses varied forms of art when the artist or artists perform or exhibit their work on stage. Since then, theatre has grown in popularity as one of the major art forms of entertainment. Theatre, dance, music, opera, magic , mime, spoken word, puppetry etc. are all included in the broader category of performing arts. Many contemporary productions still fall within the drama, tragedy, and comedy categories of ancient Greek theatre. The other seven arts are frequently incorporated into theatrical productions, with music, stage design, and literature frequently employed as components.
Architecture
Architecture is an early and persistent example of man’s urge to create significant structures throughout history. It is both an artistic medium and a practical necessity, and it is accessible to the whole world. The art of construction is called architecture. The majority of people’s conceptions of architecture as one of the art forms centre on a small number of very stunning or impressive structures.
Sculpture
The history of sculpture can be traced to the ancient period. Sculptures are typically made of clay, stone, porcelain, metal, or wood and produce three-dimensional visual images. They were the first and earliest types of public art forms in many different cultures and were frequently too large for private residences. But monarchs, religious figures, and political figures would commission them to have them put on display in public spaces as symbols of their status. Impressive public sculpture collections may be found in many classical and historical towns, including Rome, Jerusalem, Constantinople, and Athens.
Amongst the seven forms of art, one may possess sincere interest in any of them because that’s how it’s meant to be. If not for art, then what can give life a meaningful existence?
